In 1759, Arthur Guinness founded a brewery in Dublin - laying the foundation for a success story that would soon last three centuries. A morsel of useless knowledge (perhaps not so useless in the next pub quiz) shows how good Sir Arthur thought in the long term right from the start: The lease for the brewery at St. James's Gate in Dublin ran (or rather runs) for 9,000 years.
It is therefore hardly surprising that a visit to the brewery is a walk through history. Literally: many of the buildings on the site have witnessed how Guinness conquered the world from Ireland. One of these is Hop House 13, a warehouse from the early 20th century, where the different hop varieties for the brewing process are still stored today. The master brewers at the Open Gate Brewery were inspired by this exciting combination of tradition and modernity. Thanks to this Guinness "project brewery", new types of beer are constantly being created. In this case, an exceptional Lager beer(more) that impresses with its remarkable character and aroma. In keeping with its heritage, it bears the name Hop House 13 and has also been available in Switzerland since February 2019.
Peter Simpson, head of Open Gate Brewery, sums it up as follows: "I personally like beer with a fuller flavor, so I wanted to make a Lager with a lot of character and aroma." This was achieved through a sophisticated combination of Irish barley, Guinness' own yeast strain and the best hops from Australia and the USA.
The result: a fresh, crisp Lager beer with floral hop notes and aromas of apricot and peach. So while varieties such as IPA, Sour or Kriek are being celebrated around the globe (which we certainly welcome), Guinness has taken on one of the most classic beer styles of all. For many years, the typical drinks section was full of Lager beers, but there was very little innovation. In this respect, Guinness presents a real game changer with Hop House 13. A Lager that has nothing to hide in the concert of today's numerous craft beers. A beer that convincingly keeps its promises: More hops. More character. More flavor.
